WELCOME
Welcome to the Episcopal Church of St. John the Evangelist, better and affectionately known simply as “St. John’s.” Located around the corner from the busy Mission-16th Street-Valencia corridors in San Francisco’s north Mission District, St. John’s has been described by many as an “oasis” — not only for the tranquility of our garden amidst the surrounding bustling streets, or the warm golden light that fills our soaring nave on a sunny day, but because so many have found St. John’s to be a place of loving peace, healing, and renewal in an often all-too-broken world.

Established in 1857, we’re the third oldest parish in the Episcopal Diocese of California. We worship in a beautiful, historic building in rather “high” Anglo-Catholic tradition on Sunday mornings and hold a spoken Eucharist on Wednesdays. (Our partner congregation, El Buen Samaritano, who shares our address, worships in Spanish on Sundays at noon as well.) But while we may in some ways be steeped in tradition, we are also a progressive and inclusive parish, with a special vocation to respect and advocate for the dignity of LGBT people. We come from many spiritual backgrounds and live out our faith in loving communion with our Lord Jesus Christ and each other, and through acts of service and social justice throughout our community and the world.

We are a community of faith, each figuring out our journey in unique and personal ways. There are many words that people have used to describe us – authentic, sincere in our worship, serious about “walking the walk and talking the talk” of our faith – but the best way to get to know us – short of visiting us on Julian Avenue – is to listen to our stories.
